Update and a Request

I just got back from Charlottetown. Dad is still comfortable. He is slowly deterioating but he still recognizes everyone. He has some moments when you are surprised with how sharp he is. He still is cracking jokes and making people laugh. The staff there is great and his doctor is terrific at helping him with everything that is going on. It was good to see the so many people helping out Dad and Pam with everything. Suzie and Pam are almost living at Prince Edward Home and giving Dad all the love and care that he needs. His friends are great in helping him and giving Pam a chance for a break. Suzie and Pam have been taking turns staying at night in case he wakes up. I was glad I was able to take a turn to spend the night with Dad and give them a break. Pam's niece is coming home this weekend and I think she will give the night crew a break. Thanks again to everyone who is helping out.

One thing we thought of while I was there and laughing at some of the Dad stories that people were telling was how great it would be to have a collection of stories to look at but also for the grandkids to learn about their grandfather down the road when they are older. I must say that I have learned a lot about Dad that I didn't know from all the posts on the blog. It would be interesting to see the stories from friends, classmates, patients, family, etc. I set up an email address for people to send the stories to as we did not want all of them on the blog-- we all know that many of the Dad stories are not appropriate for public consumption! Please email a story, recollection, etc. about Dad, or even favorite photo to barrylingfamily@yahoo.ca. I will get them to Pam so they can have a copy at the PE home to read to Dad.

Dad told me to send a hug to everyone and he appreciates all the hugs and prayers that he is getting.

Jamie

Hi,

Thanks for the update Jamie. I'll be sure to email these stories in detail but I thought this glimpse might provide a little giggle.

Who would have thought...

...it would pour rain when the Beach Boys performed in Shediac? Certainly not the group of us that you ferried over to see them.

...I could run off so quickly after being hit by a flying puck and that you could catch up to me and offer diagnosis. You'd never pass up a chance to chase a young lady I guess :o)

...you would be treated to such a unique group performance of Happy Birthday for your 50th? Who’s idea was that anyway?

...that as a doctor you’ve touched so many lives
...that as a patient you’ve touched that many more

hugs and prayers...Spike

Hugs to you Barry, Pam and everyone else. And a biiig hug and thanks to Laura for sitting with Barry each night for awhile! Sorry we didn't meet up last weekend Jamie - hugs anyway! "The Lings" had a nice visit with Barry last Saturday and Barry woofed down four of Mum and Nancy's homemade cookies in about 18 seconds flat!! (Following rated for public consumption...) Mum and I were chuckling this evening on the phone remembering some "food" stories over the years. Back in Berwick, in the 60's, during Barry's "sabatical" from Dal he was living back at home and working at the Berwick bakery. Mum said when leaving work he would invite the guys from the shift to "come up home for some dessert". Needless to say, her baking took a s--t kicking every day! His little "snack" after school in Port Hood used to be a dozen homemade cookies and a quart of milk. Then when Jamie, Dave and Suz would arrive at Grammie and Poppie's for a visit, the first thing Barry would do is take three or four of the cookie jars from the counter, put them on the coffee table and say "go to it kids!". So we figured that he has been in training for his cookie eating ability for a long time!! There was some "justice" however during his Howe Hall days at Dal. Every Monday (without fail!!) in Port Hood, Mum would make a fresh batch of deep fried sugared donuts (ah..the good ole days!) and mail them off to Barry during his first year at Dal. Soon his floor mates caught on to which day the box arriving in the mail would be the one full of homemade donuts. They would wait for Barry to go downstairs for his mail and then barricade his door so he couldn't take the donuts to a safe place!! Gotcha! Well Barry, keep those lips smacking because Mum is already planning another batch of cookies for you in a few days. Love you loads!! Love Mo xoxoxox

As a x-ray technologist in the days of Barrys connection especially with his fun friend Roy Scantilbarry he provided such great relief to some serious situations . The families I have seen him deal with in Emerg were so wonderful it is hard to describe. He was beyond compassioned and some times had a tear in his eye.He is so loved and respected by the community of health care workers who witness him at work you would be beyond proud. He provided such stability to a serious situation which made everyone so much at ease.
Love and prayers are with you

Dear Barry, Pam, and family,
We are thinking of you every day - sending hugs and prayers. All of you are a testament to the truth of this passage:

What Cancer Cannot Do

Cancer is so limited...

It cannot cripple love

It cannot shatter hope

It cannot corrode faith

It cannot destroy peace

It cannot kill friendship

It cannot suppress memories

It cannot silence courage

It cannot invade the soul

It cannot steal eternal life

It cannot conquer the spirit.

Love to you all,
