Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas friends and family. I had a wonderful Christmas with friends and relatives visiting. It occurred to me that it is not the gifts that are important, but the friends and the visits. People are so good giving their effort and time. Me, I am starting to feel better as the week progresses. However, I am getting closer to hospitalization. That will be a decision reached by myself, my wife, my family doctor and friends. The decision will be based on my ability to get around independently. I am not having any significant pain. Hugs seem to help the most and between Pam and Suzie I get lots of those. I had a great Christmas, love and hugs to you all. Barry

A very Merry Christmas to you Barry and Pam, Suzie, Shane and everyone else down there! Thank you Barry for putting that little extra "bling" into my Christmas. You allowed me to have a get together with my Ling family and then do it all over again with Mike and the kids here in Winnipeg. I really enjoyed our time together on Saturday...and I think that Bates does indeed have the best dang Grampie ever in the whole world!! (and a true fighter also!) I suppose you are somewhat familiar with the hospital so, when that time comes, it will be OK too, and it will be a safe and loving place for you to spend some more time with the family and friends who love you. I think that after I check this blog a few more times the keyboard will short circuit from all the tears that that have flowed in but I wouldn't miss it for the world!! It lets me listen and talk to you whenever I want to. (Thanks Beth) I love you very much and always will (and I forgive you for tickling me until I piddled in my pants every time that you came home from University!!) YOU MAKE ME SMILE...BIG TIME!!

Dear Barry & family:

So many thoughts and prayers are with you tonight.

As a former patient, just want you to know that you are missed so much. They just don't make doctors like you any more!!!......in fact, I don't think they ever did! You always were completely unique!

In addition to your obvious skill as an Ortho Surgeon, your many kindnesses over the years were appreciated, and all the things that make you special are the things that seem so irreplaceable. That sense of humor....and your singing and dancing as you came into the examining room, the jokes, the constant twinkle in your eye, and all the 'horse talk'......those new guys just don't measure up when compared to you.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings during this time, and for letting all of us be able to be in contact with you. You are an inspiration to everyone who knows you.

Sending love and lots of hugs, and may God's blessings be with you and your family.

I am so glad you had a good Christmas with the important things in life surrounding you. when it comes time to go to the hospital i'm sure they will be hovering around you at all times ,you are a very special person and THE most caring person and doctor that ever was, if there are any other Doctors who read these comments to your blog may they take a really good look at what it is to be loved ,admired and so very respected ,it doesnt come by counting bucks nor acting so very superior.i hope all other doctors learn that to be THERE for your patients in everyway means so much more, think about how loved this man is and how he changed fear into laughter even as you went under for an op.One time i remember as i started to do the backward count .i started to get out 99 and the last thing i heard was "are you going or not ", i was so afraid till then .It doesnt mean much to anyone but to me it was all ok ,i trusted my doctor.
How many laughs have been spread around because of you Dr Barry and so many stories that will go on for ever because there never was nor ever will be a doctor who was always on the plain of the average joe and now its your turn to look around and see how we care for you ,i am older than you but i would gladly trade places with you at this time so you could carry on with the wonderful blessing you are to us all.God bless you my dear Doctor and friend ,one day we will all get together and laugh together again . E.Ferguson.

Barry;
Along with countless others I pray for a miracle, but know what ever happens, you are ready for it, and will continue to inspire us all for years to come.Over this year you have helped me, and all your other fans, to better appreciate the time we have on this
earth, whether it is another year or twenty, to appreciate family and friends, and to just enjoy the days we have.
You are a fighter and an example.
Thanks so much.

Also love and hugs to Pam , Susie, Jamie, Dave, and all close family.

Dear Barry, Pam, and family,
We echo all the other readers of this blog, sending our prayers, love, and support to all of you, and our thanks for sharing this journey of yours with us. The step of hospitalization will probably quadruple your hug quotient!
We are praying for all of you, and know that whatever comes, you'll handle it with your unfailing courage and optimism. Mo - we've never met, but my keyboard is in jeopardy of short-circuiting as well.
We are in Massachusetts, but tonight, as always, our hearts are in PEI, Toronto, and Ohio. Take care.
Love to you all,
Mary Beth, Paul, and family

To all of Barry's blog readers;
Now that we know he is in palliative care and may not know our messages, but hope he will, lets all give him an enormous hug and several more !!!
These should all be transferred as well to Pam, Jamie and family, David and Jen and Bates, and Suzie and Shane. Please send them lots of hugs.
Special kudos to Pam and Suzie for helping Barry through these last tough weeks.
I've been there with loved ones, and palliative care is amazing.
Thoughts
with you all always,
Ps. Mo, you are a great sister, and I know your pain, having lost two siblings.

Dear Barry and Pam. It was great to get Mum and Dad's phone call last evening saying that you enjoyed the day visiting, eating, joy riding down the halls and.....yes....even teasing the nurses - most out of character for you! I remember when....during morning rounds at IWK you, as a resident, nonchalantly looked at the head nurse and, in a loud voice, said "you left your sweater in the back seat of the car last night. I've got it for you!!" What does one respond to that ...Thanks?!?
We love you lots and keep those nurses on their toes. (We learn about "you guys" in a first year course - Doctors 101A!!) Lots of hugs and kisses xoxoxoxoxox Mo, Mike, Ashley and Andrew

Hey Badness and Pam, have been thinking about you a lot over the last few days and just wanted to sign on and say hello and send some hugs and kisses. So glad you had a nice Xmas home with each other and the family. I am sure it was a hard decision to make to come into hospital and then to Palliative care but hopefully made a little easier by all the support you have from family and friends. Keep holding onto each other. Love and hugs, Catherine

Hi Barry and Pam,

Been a while since I sent a note but I have followed your Blog right from the start. Just want to say two things. Firstly, I sure appreciate the overall message in your updates. I never knew hugs could be so powerful, but I have taken your advise and yes they work wonders - for the giver and the receiver. Secondly and simply, a Happy New Year wish to you both as well as the family. Take care.

Dear Barry & family:

Many thoughts and prayers with all of you tonight as the New Year is ushered in.

Palliative Care really is the most wonderful place, and it is comforting to know that you, and all your family, will experience their wonderful care. I'm sure you have already found that the atmosphere is one of those things that can only be experienced, not described.

Ten years ago tonight I spent New Year's Eve there with my husband, and the memories of that night are precious and wonderful. We even had a New Years Eve Party!!! Hope you did too.

Also hope you have your computer there with you so that you can still participate in your blog.....and receive all the hugs that are going your way.

Love, hugs, and may God bless all of you.
